Hatty yet again - and bead knitting

>> Wednesday, January 18, 2006

Well I had a request to see her again, so here is Hatty in the original outfit. There is meant to be a petticoat underneath, then the dress and then the pinafore over top, which creates what I described previously as the "satisfying fatness" of her clothes. She is also wearing a bead knitted amulet necklace.

I haven't mentioned bead knitting before, but it's very easy and I will describe it in case anyone doesn't know and is interested. You thread some beads onto your yarn, or in this case pearl cotton #8, and then as you knit you thread them down one at a time, so that they are in the knitting. And to do this with the pearl cotton you use tiny needles, size 0000. Here are some examples of some necklaces I made a few years ago. They're actually little bags, with a bead clasp at the top. The last one is pictured with a dime so you can get an idea of how large they are, and in fact what you can carry around in one. You can click on the pictures to see them larger.

The little bags are lovely! Is the clasp knitted too?

Thanks! The clasp is a little loop that has thread wound around it, I don't know what you call it... but you put the needle through the loop each time around. The other part is the round bead that the loop goes over.

i've seen bead knitting before and i have always wondered if it was difficult. i'm going to have to check this out a little more. your necklaces are so unique. i love how small they are. i'll have to add this to my HUGE list of library books to get.
